PROFESSOR DR. MIJANUR RAHMAN
While it is still at its nascent stage, the Department of English at University of Brahmanbaria has made significant headway in its course offerings, curriculum development, and course delivery as per current curricular trends and job market needs. University of Brahmanbaria, founded on progressive, secular, and forward-looking socio-political worldviews, staunchly believes in the transformational ethos of education as an agent of change, social mobility, and empowerment. It believes in the catalyzing power of education to bring about societal transformation. In conformity with this founding ideology, the English curriculum has been pragmatically reformed and overhauled in order to provide our students with a fit-for-purpose education.
In an increasingly interconnected world, our students must be equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to thrive in academia and the job market. That is why we have made it our mission to provide a holistic higher education that not only imparts intellectual knowledge but also develops employable skills.
Traditionally, the study of English literature has been associated with esotericism and arcaneness. However, we believe it is time to move away from this conventional notion. Our English curriculum embraces an intellectually accessible interdisciplinary approach. We have incorporated various disciplines, such as literature, literary theory, cultural studies, media studies, journalism, creative writing, applied linguistics, and ELT (English Language Teaching) into our graduate and undergraduate programs.
We understand the significance of creating a curriculum that is both intellectually rigorous but accessible and also relevant to the needs of the job market. Our goal is not only to foster critical thinking and analytical skills but also to provide practical skills that are in demand in various fields. By adopting this pragmatic interdisciplinary approach, we strive to expose our students to a wide range of subjects, allowing them to develop a broad understanding of the field of English language and literature and its cultural, societal, and economic implications. Such a dynamic curricular strategy guarantees our students’ readiness for professional careers and further academic pursuits upon completion of our academic programs.
I encourage all of our current and future students to take full advantage of the diverse range of courses and opportunities available within the Department of English. Whether your interests lie in literature, media, creative writing, or language teaching, we have something to offer you.
I am incredibly proud of the efforts that our faculty members are putting in to deliver a literary and cognate curriculum that is responsive to the changing needs of society. Together, we can ensure that our students equip themselves with the needed disciplinary knowledge and soft skills and graduate with a well-rounded education that prepares them for success in the emerging world order.
Thanks to all concerned for the continued support and dedication to the Department of English at University of Brahmanbaria. Together, we can make a difference and bring about positive changes through life-transforming education.
