Nahid Hassan is the Head and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Brahmanbaria, Bangladesh. He is an academic and researcher with a strong background in electrical and electronic engineering, particularly in the areas of semiconductor lasers, photonics, optical systems, and sensor technologies. His academic career reflects a combination of university teaching, research, technical training, and continued interest in advanced photonic technologies.
Mr. Hassan completed both his Master of Science (M.Sc.) and Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degrees in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Dhaka. His postgraduate academic work focused on semiconductor laser technology and optical feedback phenomena. His graduate thesis, titled “Numerical Analysis of Optical Feedback Noise of GaAs Semiconductor Lasers Operating in Multimode,” investigated the influence of external optical feedback on the dynamic behavior and noise characteristics of an 850 nm GaAs semiconductor laser. The study employed numerical simulation based on a multimode rate-equation model and examined changes in laser stability, mode hopping, optical intensity noise, and Relative Intensity Noise (RIN) under different optical feedback conditions.
He began his teaching career as a Guest Lecturer in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Dhaka International University in 2019. In January 2020, he joined the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Brahmanbaria as a Lecturer. He subsequently served as a Senior Lecturer from January 2023 to July 2024 and has been serving as an Assistant Professor since July 2024. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, he currently serves as the Head of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, contributing to academic administration, departmental coordination, teaching, and the development of the department’s academic activities.
His research interests are centered on photonics and semiconductor optoelectronics. He has worked on semiconductor laser dynamics, optical feedback noise, multimode laser operation, direct modulation of quantum-well semiconductor lasers, and nonlinear behavior of laser diodes. His research has resulted in publications in the Dhaka University Journal of Applied Science and Engineering and the International Journal of Photonics and Optical Technology. He has also presented research at academic conferences, including the International Conference on Materials Science and Semiconductor Devices (ICMSSD) and the International Conference on Mechanical, Industrial & Energy Engineering (ICMIEE).
Among his notable research contributions is his work on InGaN laser diodes, where he investigated gain, spectral characteristics, and nonlinear dynamics. He has also contributed to research on the direct modulation performance of quantum-well semiconductor laser diodes operating in multimode conditions. His earlier research investigated external optical feedback noise in GaAs semiconductor lasers and examined the transition from stable single-mode operation to unstable multimode behavior and sequential mode hopping as optical feedback increases.
In addition to his research, Mr. Hassan has a broad academic foundation in areas including applied optics, modern physics, quantum mechanics, physical electronics, semiconductor and VLSI technology, optical fiber communication, electronic circuits, electromagnetic theory and antennas, microwave and satellite communication, analog and digital electronics, renewable energy technology, electronic devices, and programming. His graduate-level coursework has included solid-state physics, fuzzy neural control systems, digital image processing, advanced digital image processing, and biomedical signal analysis and telemedicine.
Mr. Hassan also possesses practical experience with a range of engineering and computational tools, including COMSOL Multiphysics, MATLAB, Proteus, PSpice, and Logisim. He has programming experience in C and Assembly Language and is proficient in Microsoft Office applications. His technical interests and research experience support his broader goal of applying computational modeling, simulation, and engineering principles to emerging technologies in photonics and optoelectronics.
His undergraduate project, titled “Soil Moisture Based Automatic Water Pump Control System,” reflects his interest in applying electrical and electronic engineering concepts to practical automation and control applications. He has also participated in professional training on Outcome-Based Education (OBE), conducted by the University Grants Commission (UGC), and the Bangladesh National Qualifications Framework (BNQF), conducted by the Bangladesh Accreditation Council (BAC).
For his academic achievements, Mr. Hassan has received the National Science and Technology (NST) Fellowship from the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of Bangladesh. He also received government scholarships through the Primary School Scholarship Examination and Junior School Scholarship Examination.
As an educator, researcher, and academic administrator, Nahid Hassan is interested in fostering engineering education, research, and innovation. His long-term academic interests include advanced research in photonics, semiconductor lasers, optical sensing, and related emerging technologies. Through teaching, research, and departmental leadership, he aims to contribute to the development of skilled engineers and to advance research in photonic and optoelectronic technologies in Bangladesh and beyond.
