Brahmanbaria, July 21, 2025 — The University of Brahmanbaria has expressed profound grief and solidarity with the victims of Bangladesh’s deadliest aviation disaster in over four decades, after a Bangladesh Air Force fighter jet crashed into Milestone School and College in Dhaka on Monday, July 21.

The Chinese-made F-7 BJI fighter, on a training flight, reportedly suffered “technical and mechanical failure” before plunging into the crowded school campus. At least 27 people, including schoolchildren and the pilot, were killed, and more than 171 others — the majority students aged between 8 and 14 — were injured, with over 25 in critical condition in intensive care.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of horror, saying they heard a loud bang, followed by flames, smoke, and screams as debris struck classrooms full of children. The pilot also perished in the crash.

At a condolence event held Tuesday at the University of Brahmanbaria, faculty and students observed a moment of silence and prayed for the souls of the deceased. Speakers criticized the authorities for allowing such flights over densely populated, civilian areas, calling the disaster an avoidable tragedy caused by systemic negligence.

“We mourn the young lives lost because of carelessness. Flying a faulty aircraft over a school was a failure of responsibility,” said a senior professor at the university. “This should never happen again.”

The University of Brahmanbaria has called for a transparent investigation, better safety protocols, and accountability from both the government and the Air Force to prevent future disasters.
